Implementing marine XML for NOAA observing data

Merati, N., and E. Burger

In Proceedings of the 24th International User Conference, Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), San Diego, CA, 9–13 August 2004, http://gis.esri.com/library/userconf/proc04/docs/pap1361.pdf (2004)

This presentation will describe Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory's (PMEL) experience with developing Marine XML schema for the TAO/TRITON moorings and the Argo profiling floats that are both critical components of NOAA's ocean observing systems. Currently, the data delivered by each project are available to users via the WWW but are not easily imported into GIS formats. The release of ArcGIS 9 will allow NOAA's observational data to be imported into a geodatabase to be used for data display and analysis. We will describe a GIS implementation using Marine XML including implementing a data dictionary, conversion tools and performance issues in bringing the data into a geodatabase.
