Dr. Chidong Zhang leads the Ocean Climate Research Division of PMEL. His research interests include air-sea interaction, tropical atmospheric dynamics, the subseasonal variability (the Madden-Julian Oscillation) and its interaction with El Nino, and observations using autonomous vehicles (e.g., saildrones). He advocates to study air-sea interaction through observing and modeling the air-sea transition zone (the upper ocean, air-sea interface, and atmospheric marine boundary layer) as a single identity, instead of a sum of the three components. He is currently co-leading an international program Years of the Maritime Continent (YMC) that investigates weather-climate processes in the Indo-Pacific Maritime Continent region and their global impacts.
