Earthquakes Strike off Oregon Coast; No Tsunamis

A series of earthquakes, some with a magnitude of more than 5, have shaken the sea floor off the Oregon coast since Sunday night. None has been large enough to prompt tsunami fears.

When scientists first got the images back from West Mata Volcano, they noticed something odd.  The undersea eruptions from two of the volcano's vents about 4,000 feet below sea level in the Pacific Ocean near Samoa were behaving very differently.

We know more about the surface of the Moon and Mars than we do about the ocean’s seafloor. With water encompassing 63.78 million square miles, the oceans cover 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, with the world’s largest body of water, the Pacific Ocean, covering roughly one third.
