Re: LAS 6.0 Installation

Here's yet another Joe's perspective.. Meant to send this to the list but it just went to Joe McLean..

I am totally new to LAS, MySQL, and Apache configuration, but I've
managed to get a LAS running here at COLA:

http://www.monsoondata.org:8080/las/servlets/dataset

I also had the empty document problem, and came to the same conclusion -
that mysqld wouldn't let Tomcat connect (even though it let the mysql
command line client in with the same parameters).

I found some revealing error messages in the various files in
$lasroot/las_servlet/jakarta/logs/.

You can try starting mysqld with "--skip-grant-tables" to turn off
authentication - that will tell you if it's the problem, although for
security reasons that's not a good permanent solution.

As for Tomcat and Apache - it looks like the LAS user interface for
building requests runs as a Java servlet in Tomcat, and retrieves data
from the MySQL database, whereas the data server which generates actual
output is a collection Perl CGI scripts that run in Apache, and seem to
just use XML files for configuration info (although maybe there are SQL
calls in there too..)

So you definitely need the Apache part.

- Joe
