Hi James,
Ferret v5.81 is not built with the latest version of the netcdf library; 
we had received the libraries very shortly before the release and did 
not want to include it until we'd had a chance to do some testing. We'll 
build the next release with it, and will document the further kinds of 
inputs that this will allow.
