Participant Interview:
Peter McAuliffe
College senior
Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota

Today I had a very interesting conversation with one of the college students working with the research scientists. Peter McAuliffe is a native of Seattle, Washington. In August, Peter will start his senior year as a Geology Major at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. The college has a student body of 2000 with a wide choice of majors.

Peter is working under the direction of Dr. Edward Baker, the lead scientist from the PMEL group. He is very involved in the collection of data on this cruise. This includes preparing the CTD for the casts and tows, taking the seawater samples when the CTD unit completes a tow and monitoring the progress of the CTD as it was towed through the water column. He coordinates with Dr. Baker for the precise moment to send the signal for the unit to collect water samples.

He plans to use his research experience along the Juan de Fuca Ridge for his thesis proposal. In the spring semester he will present his thesis before the Carleton professors and student body. Peter enjoys these presentations because the Carleton students are involved in such diverse areas of study. He is amazed at the depth of study undergraduates are able to accomplish.

Soccer is one of Peter's favorite activities. Other hobbies include the African drum and bass guitar. His favorite hiking adventures have been the Olympic Rain Forrest and the Olympic Coast. With so many interests Peter is still deciding his career field after college.

We wish Peter the best as he completes his studies.
