FOCI Recruitment Forecasting

Beginning in 1992, FOCI began forecasting the recruitment of walleye pollock year classes for the Shelikof Strait region of the western Gulf of Alaska.  The forecasts are qualitative ("weak," "weak-average", "average," "average-strong" or "strong"), and they are derived from quantitative sources. Predictions are used by the National Marine Fisheries Service to prepare guidance for the North Pacific Fishery Management Council.  The council establishes fishing quotas for industry.  Through these predictions, FOCI passes the results of scientific research directly to operational use to benefit the national economy. This supports NOAA's mission to build sustainable fisheries.
