Re: Support for Mac OS browsers...

Hi Roland, all,

It seems that the applet may be the only thing hindering LAS 6 from working on non-Windows browsers.

I've just gone through just about every browser I've installed -
Mozilla 1.2, IE 5.2, Safari, and Opera 6 on Mac OS X
Netscape 4.7, Netscape 6, and Opera 6 on Red Hat Linux
- and I can generate images from *any* of them, as long as the map-selection applet is disabled.

Whereas, if I do try to use the applet, *none* of these browsers works properly.

Roland, FYI, the way to disable the applet for a specific session is to start from the following page:
instead of
When you get to the constraint page, you just get the text boxes, and the preset region menu, but no applet.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that the only platform/browser combinations that *can* handle this applet properly are Windows/IE or the obsolete Windows/Netscape 4.7.

Some suggestions:

Maybe LAS should only try to serve the applet to clients that are running Windows?

And in the long run, if the applet compatibility problems can't be solved, perhaps Javascript or even Flash/Shockwave, would work on a wider range of browsers?

Hi Folks,

We've just begun our experimentation with LAS 6.0 and I have to say I'm
quite impressed. The installation was painless (for me at least) and the
configuration options using the <category> and <filter> elements looks
quite promising.

The most disappointing thing for me has been the lack of support for Mac
OS browsers. One of the goals of the new version was to eliminate some of
the JavaScript to reduced the browser incompatibilities. I think this
version took some serious steps in that direction, but still falls short.

For example, I just sat down with an internal client for whom I'm
developing an LAS installation and tested with 3 different Mac (OS 10.2.2)
browsers and all of them failed in some way: IE 5.2 would not advance
past the Map applet (as noted in other emails to the list), Safari (1.0
v51) would not load the map applet (but worked fine with no java) and
Mozilla 1.1 flat crashed and burned loading the Map applet.

How can we/I improve the support for Mac OS browsers?
