Re: [ferret_users] rainbow.spk as a default color

Hi,

Though many people like rainbow palettes there are many criticisms of them.  One is that they can create the illusion of large data differences where there are only small differences in the data being shown. Think of a SST plot where there is a sharp line between reds and yellows, where there is really nothing important going on but the contrast draws the eye to it.  Another is that they're not readily visible to people with color blindness.  These articles talk about both of those effects,

The current default, viridis, is one of a family of palettes in common use in R and Matlab and elsewhere. I think it can be pretty dark at the dark end, but making choices with color levels and perhaps choosing other palettes is

Another thought we had about this was to maybe remind us all that the choice of color palette is worth thinking about, and perhaps customizing for different kinds of data. I like the palettes called blue_green_yellow and yellow_green_blue.

By  coincidence, when your mail came yesterday I had just been updating this FAQ, showing more of the newer color palettes also introduced with the viridis palette.

This FAQ talks about some more palette choices (it needs some updates to modernize the graphics)!

Thank you. The current ferret version has a default color provided by Patrick, instead of rainbow.
Why you guys replace the default color? The rainbow version is much better and more visible.

Hi,

In a Ferret session you can change your color palette by issuing the PALETTE command:

   PALETTE rainbow

which remains in effect until the end of the session or until another PALETTE command is issued.

To have this take effect for all of your PyFerret or Ferret sessions, put a PALETTE command into a .ferret startup file.

In fact  the means of setting the default color palette is that it is the file named "default.spk" in the directory where the color palette files reside. So if you don't share the Ferret installation with others who still may want the viridis to be the installed default, another method would be to make a copy of the palette you want as the default and name it "default.spk", and put that in a directory listed in the environment variable FER_PALETTE.

Hi Ferret_users,

I would like to get the "rainbow" ppt as my default colorbar.
Can anybody tell me how to do that?

Thanks
