Summary of Cruise:

Narrative:

The cruise began with a long steam to Southeast Bering Sea Carrying Capacity’s (SEBSCC) Mooring 2 (M2). Monitoring samples were obtained at the mooring and from 4 stations around M2. The water column was well-mixed, temperatures were cold (0.5 — 0.9 oC), there was measurable nitrate and silicate in the surface water, and the spring phytoplankton bloom had not yet begun. A 24-hr station at M2 was conducted for primary productivity, copepod egg production, and chaetagnath feeding. Test deployments of a SCAMP (Self-Contained Autonomous Micro-structure Profiler) were conducted to determine proper ballasting of the instrument and collect data. After completing our work at M2 we traveled NW, occupying SEBSCC stations along the 70 m isobath on our way to Mooring 4 (M4). Monitoring samples were obtained at M4 and from four stations surrounding the mooring. The water column was slightly stratified, temperatures were warmer (1 — 2 oC) than at M2, and the phytoplankton bloom had begun with diatoms dominating the assemblage (Chaetoceros spp., in particular). Surface nitrate and silicate concentrations were lower than at M2. A 24-hr. station at M4 was conducted for primary productivity, copepod egg production, chaetagnath feeding, and micro-scale structure.

We then steamed between the Pribilof Islands and out Pribilof Canyon taking CTD and bongo tows to look for walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) eggs and larvae, and for evidence of transport of nutrients along the axis of the canyon and up onto the shelf. Concentrations of large phytoplankters were so high that our largest mesh zooplankton nets were clogging. Underway fluorescence remained high (3 — 6 FSU) during the transect between the Pribilof Islands and during the transect along the shelf edge ("the Greenbelt"). At the southeast shelf break stations, phytoplankton clogging was again a problem so we towed the 60 cm bongo frame vertically, rather than obliquely. As we left the shelf break, underway fluorescence first decreased, then increased as we approached the site of SEBSCC Mooring 3 (M3).

Monitoring samples were obtained at M3 and at four stations surrounding the mooring. Phytoplankton clogging of nets was again a problem, but this time it was the fine mesh (153 µm) 20 cm bongos that were affected. The cod end foamed when the net was washed and there was a distinctive odor of Phaeocystis pouchetti in the catch. Examination under the microscope confirmed that the bloom was dominated by the colonial form of this taxon. A 17-hr station at M3 was conducted for primary productivity and chaetagnath feeding. Calanus marshallae females, present at this station in February, were now absent and we were unable to do egg production experiments. In addition, on the first deployment of the SCAMP from this station, the instrument knocked against the ship’s hull and a bulk head connector snapped. Unfortunately that particular connector was not included in the spare parts kit sold with the instrument.

We then left Mooring 3 and steamed further on to the shelf leaving the Outer Shelf Domain and entering the Middle Shelf Domain on our way back to M2. Again the phytoplankton underway fluorescence decreased after we left M3 (< 1.0 FSU) and then increased slightly as we approached M2 (1 — 2 FSU). Once at M2 we conducted our last 24-hr station for primary productivity, copepod egg production, and chaetagnath feeding. The water column was now stratified (both salinity and temperature), the water was slightly warmer (0.5 — 1.5 oC), the spring phytoplankton bloom had begun with Thalassiosira, Coscinodiscus and to a lesser extent Chaetoceros dominating the diatom community. We also saw Phaeocystis colonies, but their concentration was lower than at M3. Nitrate and silicate concentrations had decreased since our previous visit.

We finished the cruise with two lines of stations (4 each) orthogonal to the Alaska Peninsula and crossing the Inner Front. Bongo net tows (60 cm only) were taken to look for the eggs and larvae of walleye pollock. Pollock larvae were found in abundance at the stations closest to the peninsula. Larvae from the discard net were preserved in alcohol for otolith studies.

Days Lost to Weather:
None. For the duration of the cruise, a high pressure cell was stationary over the eastern Bering Sea resulting in excellent working conditions and the absence of wind and wind mixing.
Days Lost to Equipment Failure:
The ship’s deadhead speed to M2 was slower than normal (only 10 kts) due to problems with the main engine’s governor. The Chief Engineer was able to make repairs/adjustments during the first 24-hr. station and transit speed increased to 11 kts.
Recommendations:
Work with Program to replace the sink lost when the flammables cabinet was installed.

Work with Program to find a way to tap fresh water from the Chem Lab sink for de-ionization with columns and not lose the use of the main sink faucet.

Work with Program to have strategy for providing spare electronic sensors that are mission-critical (e.g. conductivity cells for SeaBird 911+ CTD and SeaCat).
