• Joint meeting of FOCI and OCC personnel -- Jack Helle, OCC, will be in Seattle at the end of November.  At that time, there may be a short meeting to exchange information on FOCI and OCC programs, and to discuss potential  shared research in the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea.

 
• Special journal issue on the southeastern Bering Sea ecosystem --  With the maturity of the SEBSCC and Inner Front projects, we are taking the opportunity to plan a special journal issue on the southeastern Bering Sea ecosystem.  A planning meeting was held on Wednesday, November 10 during the joint SEBSCC and Inner Front PI meeting.  Presently there are about 25 papers planned.  A committee was appointed to oversee production of the issue:  George Hunt, Jim Overland, Phyllis Stabeno, and Anne Hollowed.  Potential journals are Fisheries Oceanography, Topical Studies in Oceanography, and Progress in Oceanography.Participation is open to all authors, not just SEBSCC and Inner Front scientists.   Manuscripts are due September 1, 2000, with drafts circulating among authors by July 1.    Prospective authors are to supply Allen Macklin with a list of titles, authors, manuscript themes, and data sets to be used.  See http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/sebscc/joint_meeting/special_issue.html for the list of contributions and other information.

 
• EVOSTC Restoration Workshop --  The annual Restoration Workshop of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trust Council will be held on January 18-19, 2000, in Anchorage.  The theme of this year's workshop is Applying Science to Human Needs: Starting the Transition to the Gulf Ecosystem Monitoring (GEM) Program.  Allen Macklin has been invited to address the plenary session.  He will work with FOCI scientists to develop a presentation that focuses on FOCI's Gulf of Alaska long-term monitoring, science applications, and willingness to partner with GEM.

• DSDB log forms -- FOCI's  Discrete Sample DataBase is moving to Access from R/Base.  This presents an opportunity to upgrade the database in several ways.   Log forms will be modified to allow identification of the funding source (e.g., FOCI, SEBSCC, ARI) for each scientific operation, and to provide space for entry of information about Niskin water bottle samples. These changes will make sample tracking and identification easier. It was suggested that the database have the ability to log multiple funding sources for each sample. Jeff Napp and Ned Cokelet will attempt to consolidate the CDT and DSDB log forms.

• NOAA Ship Ron Brown -- The 24-day cruise scheduled for May on the Ron Brown has been split into two cruises. The first leg will service tsunami moorings, the second leg will study transport in the southeastern Bering Sea.

The next FOCI PI meeting will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, 9 December 1999, in the AFSC Director's Conference Room (4/2143). Please submit to Allen Macklin, no later than the day before the meeting, agenda items and fax-ready copies of figures or handouts that you intend to present at the next meeting. Alternately, presentation materials may be posted on the WWW or e-mailed to remote participants before the meeting.
