Re: bookmarking images
Could the data server be easily modified to print the "data server
request API" URL for a given image in its output?
For instance there could be a link that says something like
"Right-click this link to bookmark image".

Actually, youcan generate a URL for if you are familiar with the LAS
data server request API. The API is documented in the LAS manual in
las/doc/manual/reqapi.html.
There are two Perl scripts that come with LAS (ls.pl, lasget.pl) that
generate such a request if you want to hack the code. Or, make a
request to a LAS server and check out the server/log/access file for
the URL used in the request.

Have you considered adding some way to do this? This would be highly
desirable based on the type of usage we get for our current image
pages. A lot of people decide which variables and regions they are
interested in, set a bookmark, and check back each time our model
output updates.
Also, we put together web pages containing predefined collections of
images. We could use links to a LAS to generate these images on demand
if there was a way to encode the constraints in the URL.

Joe,
The output filename does not expire with each session. It is generated
with the Digest-MD5 perl module. This module converts arbitrary input
into an RSA encrypted string, called a 'digest'. In the case of LAS,
the arbitrary input is the xml request coming to the data server.
So, whenever you ask for exactly the same thing, you will generate
exactly the same encrypted file name. Unfortunately, you cannot
regenerate the xml request from the file name.
This doesn't address your issue of a permanent URL for a specific
output
graphic. Currently there is no mechanism for this in LAS.

Is there a way to bookmark a las-generated image so that it will be
automatically regenerated if it has expired from the cache?
I assume that URLs of the form
las-output/d6c5e016e894cd5f0c1995547cc00e46.gif are just temporary
unique ID's which are only valid within a session..
