I figured it out, my pathname/filename in the descriptor file was too
long. I shortened it up and now it works fine. I was able to find
something in the Ferret archives 
(http://ferret.wrc.noaa.gov/Ferret/Mail_Archives/ferret_mail_archives.html) 
about a 72 column limit in the descriptor files.
