Re: LAS support for Mac OSX

Mike and Jon,
Since we are pretty much all Mac and Unix here we have been doing some testing.
For these tests I disabled the checks for operating system and version in lasxml/ui/index.html. Roy Mendelssohn, who has OSX up and running got the following results:

On Mac OSX running in "classic" version with Netscape 4.78, the LAS runs just fine (seems a little slow though)

On Mac OSX running in regular mode, Netscape 6 works just fine (also slow)
The key here was first to disable the check in index.html, and to get the necessary plugin. The required plugin can be found at

http://www.versiontracker.com

Click on the MacOSX tab, then search (bottom of left frame) the MacOSX pages for "Netscape". Both the Netscape application and the plugin are there. Roy downloaded both and used these in his test. The versions are:

Netscape MRJ plugin 1.0d7
Netscape X 6.2.1

Mike,

If your enthusiasm level is high you are more than welcome to dig into
the code. I'm not sure what your Javascript debugging environment is
like on your system but the files of interest are

lasxml/ui/las.js all of the "business" logic
lasxml/ui/jsconfig/* information on datasets, variables and grids

You will probably want to do some background searching/reading on
javascript support with browsers for Macintosh. It is certainly
possible that you will be able to narrow things down to a few small
hunks of javascript for which there may be workarounds.

Thanks in advance for any time you spend on this and good luck.

Jon,

The applet by itself works on our OSX system. I'm wondering if
some simple changes to the JavaScript on our Version 5.0 LAS server
will fix it so that more folks can use our data.

Any suggestions here? Am I opening a whole can of worms by considering
this? (I'm not suggesting that PMEL make the changes, I would consider
doing them myself.)
