gif images and 16-bit colour

hello,

I'm using Ferret v4.91b3 on a Linux machine which uses 16-bit colour.
When I try to make a gif image using for example:

fill jim
frame/file=jim.gif

the program crashes and does a core dump. 

However, if I run my X-server with 8-bit colour, everything works fine and
gif files are correctly produced.

Any suggestions?
