Re: [ferret_users] version of ferret for windows

Hi-
Our funding does not support us to maintain Ferret in a Windows environment.  We have a version which will run under Windows XP but not under Windows 7. We have put a README file with more information about the process of setting up Virtual Box and linux; it's linked to the main Ferret Downloads page and the Windows XP Downloads pages,
http://ferret.pmel.noaa.gov/static/Downloads/windows_xp_downloads.html

Where you will see this NOTE

PLEASE NOTE! An alternative for running Ferret under Windows: We have had good successes running Ferret under the (free) Virtual Box virtualization environment. Install Virtual Box and then intstall one of the available free and well supported Unix platforms such as Ubuntu. This gives you an environment where you can install and run a Ferret executable for Linux. It also means you can run the latest Ferret releases rather than the old versions available for Windows. See the WINDOWS README file for more details.
