read a keyboard entry ?

Hello !

Just a short question : is there any way to read an user's "keyboard" entry from inside Ferret ?
The equivalent in the Korn shell would be the variable $A here below :

work@El Nino ~> echo "give a number :" ; read A ; echo "the number is $A"
give a number :
7
the number is 7
work@El Nino ~>
