However, both did not quite what I want -

I want to keep the tick labels: 01 02 03 ... through the day, say,
but get rid of the axis label: June 15

Interestingly PPL TXLINT,0,0 got me an arithmetic exception,
which might be due to the fact that I was in a viewport..

I guess, you are right, PPL TXLINT should be able to do 
the trick - move the axis label off the page? 
There isn't a way to get other text into the axis label?
