CRUISE OBJECTIVES:

  1. The collection of biological and physical samples at 6 stations along FOCI’s cardinal sampling line (Line 8) in Shelikof Strait, Alaska. The line has been sampled in the spring, each year, since 1985.
  2. An ADCP calibration to groundtruth the continuous ADCP collections.

CRUISE SUMMARY:

We boarded the Wecoma on May 7 at 9:00 ADT and immediately began to steam towards Line 8. We arrived at the first station, FOX061 at 14:30 ADT and completed a paired 20cm/60cm bongo and a CTD cast. These operations were continued at the remaining 5 stations. The only misstep occurred when the CTD bottles failed to trip due to incorrect initial settings of the Niskin bottles. We had ample time to repeat the tow and collect the samples.

Upon completion of Line 8, on May 8 at 03:30 ADT, the ship began steaming towards a bay to begin the ADCP calibration. The Captain and mates selected the bay following the guidelines in the ADCP handbook provided by Ned Cokelet. The calibration was completed by 12:30 ADT.

Since all cruise objectives had been completed it was decided to steam to Kodiak early. We arrived at the USCG pier May 8 at 20:30 ADT.
