Much
of the information that FOCI collects about the biophysical environment
is gathered by oceanographic moorings such as the one being deployed in
the picture. Different types of sensors are mounted on the moorings:
wind and temperature gauges, sea water temperature sensors, salinity sensors,
current meters, light meters, nitrate and chlorophyll meters, sediment
samplers, and others. When equipped with satellite transmitters,
such moorings can relay information about the present environmental state.
Moorings such as these are imperative for any program that requires long-term,
systematic monitoring of the marine environment. |
