Much
of the field research is performed from the NOAA fisheries research vessel
Miller
Freeman. This ship is especially suited for physical and
biological oceanographic studies. She can recover and deploy oceanographic
moorings, profile the ocean from surface to bottom over the continental
shelf, tow fragile nets to sample plankton, and trawl for
fish. This vessel is also equipped with acoustic systems for the
remote imaging of fish and plankton and remote measurement of ocean currents.
Marine observers scan for seabirds and marine mammals from the flying bridge and collect samples using small boats. |
