The NeMO Net buoy is the hub of the communication system. It talks with seafloor instruments via acoustic modems that communicate at a rate of 600 baud. This rate is adequate for the limited amounts of data that need to be transfered at NeMO and allows data packets to be embedded multiple times for redundancy and increased reliability. The buoy communicates with the instruments on the seafloor every hour.

The NeMO Net buoy can link to shore via two independent satellite systems: Orbcomm and Iridium. The Orbcomm uplink is 2400 baud and the downlink is 4800 baud. For Iridium the rate is 2400 baud in both directions.
