NOAA Ship Ron Brown - ROV Cruise

image of NeMO Net buoy, click for full storyThe wind and seas came up last night and have kept us out of the water for the last 18 hours - our first down time due to weather so far. However, we received some good news today: after the NeMO Net buoy was deployed yesterday, the communications link was tested from shore and the system is working properly. Engineers in Seattle were able to query the interactive fluid sampler on the seafloor and it has successfully sent back replies. More...

BIG KEITH KNOCKS OFF DEFENDING CHAMP HERB WATSON!
We had our 2001 NeMO/RON BROWN Ping Pong Final today. In the "Battle of the Paddle" top seated Herb Watson faced off against "Big" Keith Tamburri. It took all seven games to decide the winner. In the last game, at deuce, Big Keith had a couple nice returns and came out on top. When asked for a comment about his win he stated, "I'd like to thank my fans. I gave it 110%. If not for my teammates, I wouldn't have won." When asked about his strategy coming into the match he said, "I tried to hit the ball onto the table." Nice win for Big Keith and a great game by Herb. R/V Wecoma - Missy Holzer

image of lab, click for full storyDuck! Hold onto your seat! Keep both feet on the ground at the same time! No fancy footwork when the ship is rolling and pitching in high seas! Warnings sometimes aren't enough to keep yourself from moving in a direction contrary to your desired motion. Unless you're out here or have been on a Tilt-a-Whirl at the carnival for 12 hours, it's tough to get a true sense of what really happens when the ocean is in motion. Those "sea stories" that all the science staff and crew relate are merely stories unless you've seen a wave crash into one side of the ship and make it all the way over to the other. More...

Marine Biologist - University of Victoria

Jeff G: What do you think of being at sea?

Amanda: This is my second cruise. Most of my background is in marine ecology and field ecology so I've spent most of my time in boats in the intertidal. For me, I feel more distant from the science here because I'm not putting the arrays down on the ocean floor. I'm telling someone else to do it for me. It's a totally different experience. I think it's neat out here because of the people you get to work with, chemists, geologists, and microbiologists. I don't know of any other science situation where this number of people with such broad expertise work together and are asking questions together. That's really unique and I love it. However, I get really seasick, so on a personal level it's not really fun. More...
