Welcome to Leg 3 of the 2000 Vents Program. Let us take a minute to introduce our selves to our cruise followers.

My name is Mary Beth Sands and I am a teacher at Franklin High School located in Livonia, Michigan, just outside of Detroit. I have been a teacher at Franklin High School for five years teaching Chemistry, Math and Biology. Having done much boating on the Great Lakes I was interested in coming to the Pacific Northwest in order to participate in oceanographic research. I am honored to be a Teacher-At-Sea serving on the Ronald H. Brown for the next two weeks. Hopefully I will be able to return to Michigan with data, pictures and video collected while at sea.

Hi, I am Carol McDowell and I am an earth science teacher at Jamestown High School in Williamsburg/James City County, Virginia. I am very excited to be a part of the Teacher-At-Sea Program since my students have been following the progress of the RONALD H. BROWN and its research in Meteorology and Oceanography for over a year. To actually be where the sea floor is actively venting and moving apart is awe-inspiring. We have departed Victoria, British Columbia and have successfully avoided initial bouts of seasickness. We have arrived at the Axial Volcano and are collecting moorings off of the ocean floor.
