access control for LAS?

Hi all,

Some of the data providers here at NCAR are interested in limiting
access to certain datasets provided by their LAS. That is, they would
like to provide public access to some datasets while limiting access
for other datasets to the principals involved, all within the same 
server. Has any work been done along these lines? Or can anyone 
suggest an approach for implementing this feature?
