Re: [ferret_users] plot labels -> increasing size or changing to embedded font (viewport)
Hi Torban,
Are you making postscript files? The lines often look very thin in
those. There's an FAQ about editing the postscript files themselves to
thicken up the lines:
http://ferret.pmel.noaa.gov/Ferret/faq/changing-line-thickness-in-postscript-files
The labels are drawn using Hershey fonts. These are simply lines drawn
to form the letters and numbers, so there are not separate font elements
that can be edited. Thickening the lines overall may improve the look
of the labels. You can adjust the size of labels in Ferret - see
Chapter 6, Customizing Plots for the details:
http://ferret.pmel.noaa.gov/Ferret/documentation/users-guide/customizing-plots/
Another thing to consider is PyFerret, which is available now for
download, and described here:
http://ferret.pmel.noaa.gov/Ferret/documentation/pyferret/. Pyferret
does its graphics in the same way as classic Ferret, and draws lines in
the same way, but calls a different lowest-level graphics library. It
can save images as .png or .pdf files. Have a look at the images in the
documentation pages, such as this page,
http://ferret.pmel.noaa.gov/Ferret/documentation/pyferret/example-sessions-ferret/,
to see if you think that would be a good option for you.

Dear Ferret Users,
I have a few questions regarding the optimization of plots:
1) Is there a way to increase the contour width beyond a value of
three (I use the /thickness=3 command)? I plot several maps with the
viewport command and the contours are very thin in the final plot
despite using the largest thickness.
2) I have the same problem with the longitude and latitude labels.
They get very small. I tried increasing the font size in Adobe
Illustrator, however the labels are not recognized as a individual
font path. Is there a workaround to get nice large labels?
Thank you very much!
