To view the videos and animations in this web site you need the Quicktime plug-in for your web browser.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: I'm using Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows v5.5 (SP2) or v6.0 (or above) and I can't see the movies, what's wrong?
A: These versions of Internet Explorer for Windows no longer support Netscape-style plug-ins. We have added new HTML code to our Virtual Site pages with embedded Quicktime movies that will prompt you to load something called ActiveX Control for Quicktime from Apple. Once you have loaded this piece of software, then the movies should work with your browser. Just visit one of the Virtual Site pages first to automatically load this software.

If this does not solve the problem, and you are getting the following error message: "This page provides potentially unsafe information to an ActiveX control. Your current security settings prohibit running controls in this manner. As a result, this page may not display correctly", then do the following to change your security settings within Internet Explorer in order to see the movies:
Go to the "Tools" menu and select "Internet Options". Next, choose the "Security" tab at the top of the window that opens, then click on the "Custom level" button. Within that window click on the "enable" radio buttons for all the settings within the "ActiveX controls and plug-ins" group of options. Then click OK several times and that should enable your browser to play the Quicktime movies.

Q: I'm not using Internet Explorer, but I don't see the fly-through movies or the panoramas on the Virtual Site pages, what's wrong?
A: The Quicktime plug-in is not loaded properly on your computer. Go to the Quicktime web site and follow the installation instructions. If you have done that and are still having problems, try rebooting your computer (to reload the registry) or check with your system administrator (sometimes loading new software on networked PC's requires administrator privilege).

Q: The movie windows show up on the Virtual Site pages, but they seem to take forever to load, what's wrong?
A: The NeMO Explorer web site has been designed for relatively fast internet connections. The movie and panorama files on these pages are relatively large (0.5-1.5 Mb) and the videos run at about 60Kb/sec, so if you have a slow internet connection (slower than DSL) it may take a long time to fully load the fly-through movie and panorama on the Virtual Site pages. As an alternative, relatively fast internet connections are available at many public libraries and schools. We may make versions of these pages for slower connections in the future.

Q: The panoramas don't seem to work properly, what's wrong?
A: If the panorama does not show up at all, make sure you have the Quicktime plug-in loaded properly for your web browser. If you can see the panorama scene, note that the panorama files must load completely before they work properly. The files are large, so if you have a slow internet connection it may take a while. The Virtual Site panorama files are 0.5 to 1.5 Mb each, and the panorama of Axial caldera is 3.2 Mb. The panoramas give a 360° view of each site. Click and drag your mouse inside the panorama window to look in different directions. The buttons in the bottom left of the panorama window zoom the view in or out and show embedded hotlinks to video clips. In the ASHES, CASM, and Marker 33 Virtual Sites clicking on ROPOS will move you to a different location within the scene.

Q: The fly-through movie starts and then stops, or doesn't play at all, what's wrong?
A: Again, make sure you have the Quicktime plug-in loaded for your web browser. Also, the fly-through movies must load completely before they play properly. The files are large, so if you have a slow internet connection it may take a while. The virtual site fly-through movie files are 1.0 to 1.5 Mb each, and the fly-through movie of the 1998 lava flow is 4.2 Mb.
