An inexpensive air-deployable midocean tsunami gauge

Shinmoto, D.Y., and M.J. Vitousek

In Proceedings of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics Special Tsunami Symposium, Manuscript Report No. 48, Ensenada, Baja California, 23–26 March 1977, 242–244 (1978)

In order to increase chances of recording a tsunami in the deep ocean the authors felt that a gauge system capable of being flown out to deep water far from shore and emplaced on the bottom, after a tsunami was generated but before wave arrival, should be developed. This system is described in sufficient detail to permit technicians to construct similar instruments.
