Dr. Kim Andrews explores questions about how environmental variation influences marine biological diversity over space and time, both within species and across communities of species. She uses cutting edge techniques that rely on high-throughput DNA sequencing technologies, such as metabarcoding, RADseq, and multiplex PCR amplicon sequencing. Metabarcoding provides a way to identify the species present in marine communities using plankton samples and environmental DNA (eDNA) water or sediment samples, with much less time and expense than morphology-based techniques such as picking and sorting from plankton or trawl samples. RADseq and amplicon sequencing enable high-resolution characterization of population structure and genetic diversity, and provide insight into how species adapt to different environments at the genomic level. Information from this work helps us understand how individual species and entire ecosystems will respond to environmental change and fishing pressure.
