PROJECTS
Meghan Cronin leads the Ocean Climate Stations project at NOAA PMEL. Ocean Climate Stations are moored buoys that carry a
suite of sensors to monitor important climate processes. PMEL's Ocean Climate
Stations are part of the global network of OceanSITES
(http://www.oceansites.org) time series reference sites. The OCS project also makes air-sea interaction observations from other types of autonomous platforms such as Saildrone -- an Uncrewed Surface Vehicle.
https://www.pmel.noaa.gov/OCS/.
- Saildrone missions Tropical Pacific Observing System (TPOS) Pilot Study funded by NOAA GOMO and OMAO: Mission 1 (2017)-- 2 Saildrone were sent to the NASA SPURS2 study site at 125°W, 10°N to compare its measurements to shipbased and the WHOI buoy observations. After this intensive observational period, the SD proceeded to the equator, performing intercomparisons against NDBC TAO buoys. Mission 2 (2018) & 3 (2019)-- 4 drones were sent to 0°140°W and performed intercomparisons against moored buoys, frontal studies and convection surveys in the ITCZ. Uncrewed Surface Vehicles Integrated within the TPOS / USV as a Research and Operational Platform. TPOS Missions in 2021 -- 2 Saildrones to 0° 110°W; in 2022 -- 2 Saildrones to 0° 125°W; in 2023 -- 2 Saildrones with ASVCO2, one with EK80 one with ADCP to 0° 155°W. Funded by NOAA OMAO & NOAA NOPP. https://www.pmel.noaa.gov/OCS/saildrone
