Hi John,
Thank you for the report. When a dataset has a variable that shares a 
name with Ferret's internal keywords, such as Z, we try to work around 
that. Clearly this is not working correctly.  Let me have a look. I 
think I can construct a dataset which has this kind of issue - I can't 
see your datsets but I'll let you know if I need any more details about 
what's in them.
