Re: [las_users] LAS title placement

During a workshop with high school teachers, we were made aware that the graph title along the bottom of a plot was confusing because teachers and students are taught to put the x-axis info on the bottom.  Although the x-axis info is on the bottom of the plot, it was suggested that the title appear on the top.  From the Ferret list, I know this can be done but how/where could this be setup in LAS (6.5 or Armstrong)?   Any there any plans to make this an option in Armstrong?

Hi Penny,

Short answer:  It would not be hard to come up with a custom (simplified) layout for kids that could produce plots for particular datasets.  We can help you to do that.  It would be harder to place the variable title at the top of the plot in general.  Here's the background:

There are titles for both the dataset and the variable to be considered on most plots generated from LAS.  For example:
Dataset title:  COADS Monthly 1 Degree Enhanced
   Variable title: Sea Surface Temperature
And in many cases there is also the axis label of the horizontal axis -- say "Degrees Longitude" or whatever.  At the top of the plot are also essential annotations, e.g. date, depth, etc.

In the default layout the dataset title is placed at the top, the axis label is directly under the axis, and the variable title is below the axis label and larger.  The difficulty to moving the variable title to the top, in general, is the management of "real estate" on the plot; there's already a lot of information crowding the space above the plot.
