Re: [las_users] animation
Dave,
Thanks for pointing this out. I'm posting to the users group again as
your previous email bounced.

Hi Jon,
I still have the animation code that Maartin DeKoningh developed. I
never have sent it on to you
because it had dependencies on old LAS 5.0 code that I intended to
remove, but
have never had the time to get to. It also had a limitation, not in
the animator itself, of course, but of
the interface, that allowed it to animate properly only over monthly
data.
It is running on two sites (with the browser/OS limitations of LAS 5):
http://dataportal.ucar.edu/arcas and
http://dataportal.ucar.edu/vemap
You just choose xyt volume as the view and either 'animated GIF' or
'animation (java)' as the product.
Be sure to choose a monthly dataset. I think it limits the number of
frames to a maximum of 10 years' worth.
It would be nice to get his work out there, but I'm still constrained
on time as far as being able to port
it to the latest LAS interface. Maybe someone else could. I'd be happy
to make the code available and
try to help someone figure it out.

Andrea,
We've had a couple of requests for animations and the holdup has
always been no specific source of funding to do it and the fact that
Ferret does not create animations as one of its native output types.
To get animation functionality you could add a custom operation (in
las/server/custom/custom.pl) that would instruct Ferret to spit out a
bunch of .gif images with a sequential naming scheme. Then you'd
need to invoke another tool (whirlgif? imagemagic?) to ingest these
and spit out an animation in the desired format. Once this is
created, LAS will return it to the end user.
If you or anyone else has code that can do this we'd love to see it
and include it in our las/contrib/ area.

Hi LAS users.
Is LAS able to animate time sequences? If it's not currently able
would this feature be added with a method in Ferret.pl per the
custom operations example? Has anyone already done this?
Thanks.
