$HOME environment variable

Hello,

on my system, LAS cannot access to DOD files...
I suspect this is because $HOME environment variable is not defined and
apache process runs under username "apache" and has no write access to
root directory (ferret.pl sets this directory as the default $home)

please, could anyone tell me how I can configure Apache or LAS to have
$home defined ?
