I'm sorry, but I cannot quite see what's wrong from just the error 
message.  I think the best way to track down the problem would be to 
work with a copy of your configuration.  Can you make the XML 
configuration available either by ftp, mailing it to the list or by 
turning on the LASinfo.pl script and pointing us to your LASserver.pl 
URL.  Instructions for LASinfo.pl are at: 
http://ferret.pmel.noaa.gov/Ferret/LAS/Documentation/manual/utilities.html#LASinfo.
