Re: Question about cartographic projection in LAS

Jonathan,

Thank you for your response. Of course I will tell you if I do this implementation here in the future.

Bests regards,
Tony

Tony,

A year ago we thought we would develop some standard map projections in LAS as an output option but that still hasn't happened and is unlikely to happen in the near future.  What is needed is for someone to create some new LAS visualization scripts for Ferret (the back end visualization tool) that generate map projection output.  Ferret certainly has the capability to do a wide variety of map projections.

Here's what would be required for you to implement this on your server.  It requires a working knowledge of Ferret and some dabbling with the template syntax we're using.

If you want all your XY plots to be in a particular projection
  1. create the directory las/server/custom
  2. copy las/server/jnls/draw_2d.tmpl into las/server/custom
  3. modify las/server/custom/draw_2d.tmpl to call another script that generates the map projection only in the case of XY plots
A more general solution would be to have map projections be either a new product type or perhaps an output option (or both).  This would require more changes at various places in the code and I'd recommend against it unless you're already familiar with adding new product types to LAS.

Information on Ferret map projection scripts is here:

http://ferret.pmel.noaa.gov/Ferret/FAQ/#map_projections

Sorry I can't offer you a pat solution.  We have too many requests for new functionality and not enough programmers at the moment.

              Mr Callahan,

I work for "Collection Localisation Satellite", in the spatial oceanographic department. I have installed a LAS 6.1 to allow the visualisation of our oceanographic data.
I have a question : can we put grid data which are on a Mercator projection ? Do we have to do geographic projection only ?
