very weird porb - HELP!

I was having a prob with the user interface - menu wouldn't expand for
the first dataset. So after much fruitless effort, decided to do a fresh
install of not only LAS but also mysql.

Deleted LAS and mysql directories, reinstalled LAS and mysql from downloaded
tarballs (used default Levitus/COADS for initial LAS setup), rebooted
machine, *and the problem remains* !!!



This is very bizarre, I'm at my wits end trying to work out what possibly
could have changed since the initial installation several weeks ago (I'm
sure it worked OK), *especially* given the complete new reinstallation
and reboot.



I've appended an extract from 
lasxml/ui/log/debug__local_packages_solaris_lasxml_ui__left_pl
for the following sequence of operations:

1) Opening browser to initial LAS page (COADS dataset is selected and
 expanded)
2) Selecting Levitus dataset in UI (it expands as expected)
3) Selecting COADS dataset again (it fails to expand)

The default COADS and Levitus datasets appear in the UI in that order.

Notice in the log extract that 'current state' is undefined each time a
dataset is selected. The nonexpanding first dataset is exactly what you
expect if $self->{sessionData}->{state} (in LASTemplate.pm/setState())
is not being preserved somewhere.



Has anyone else come across this prob before, or have any ideas at all
what might be going on?!?!?!
