I often want to produce a hardcopy of a plot without displaying it,
e.g. when not on an X terminal.  
set mode metafile
seems pretty determined to open an X-window somewhere, at least under
V4.91.  Not setting DISPLAY makes ferret very unhappy.  One solution
is to run xvfb (the X virtual frame buffer) but not every system seems
to have this.  Can I persuade ferret that just hardcopy is ok?
