GIF images broken?

Ferreters,

What type of GIF images does Ferret produce these days? I had 
given up on the idea of making gif's as I seem to recall that
ferret gif's were broken under DEC unix. So... I tried making
some today under Linux. But here too they seem to be broken!
At least xv 3.10a is unable to load them. Is ferret producing
gif89's?

Any suggestions?
