Your suggestion works (thanks) but I'm trying to get my Fortran 90 netCDF-gen-
erating code to work. Also, the dataset itself is 700Mb+, so rewriting it
(it's comprised of several variables) is messy and very time-consuming.

Turns out if I make the time axis units "days" instead of "years", it's OK,
that is, the last time sample is mid-December of year 300. I wonder why a
factor of 365.2425 in the time axis index makes such a difference.
