connecting cdf-files along a time-axis

Hello Ferreters!
Does anybody know, how to create a cdf-file with e.g. L=1:10 timesteps of
files like this:
   2> ./SrECMd_482195.cdf
 name title I J K L
 DET DET 1:286 1:242 1:1 1:1
 NO3 NO3 1:286 1:242 1:1 1:1
 PHY PHY 1:286 1:242 1:1 1:1
 SSH SSH 1:286 1:242 1:1 1:1
 ZOO ZOO 1:286 1:242 1:1 1:1

??
It sounds so easy but I did not manage to do it like it is done in the
converting_chapter of the manual. Even though I defined different grids
with a x:x:1-time-axis when using "append" the L did not vary. Apparently
the procedure using cdf-files is different form that using
ascii-files.
Thanks before, Ulf.
