Curt,

Missing values are always plotted as "holes".  This means that they take
on the background color. What you probably want is best achieved in this
manner:

1) set the palette to black and SHADE/NOKEY one of the etopo datasets over
    the region of interest (they don't have any missing values)

2) set the palette to your favorite and SHADE/OVER/KEY your data

All of the "holes" will now be black.


yes? palette black
yes? use etopo120
yes? shade/nokey rose
yes? palette default
yes? use coads_climatology
yes? shade/over/key sst[l=1]
