One more detail.  If you use SHADE/SET/PALETTE=   then the palette 
setting should not need to be set among the PPL commands after 
SHADE/SET.  It turns out that if you specify the name without the ".spk" 
then everything works as expected.  I haven't looked into why this is 
the case.

 shade/pal=blue_red_centered/lev=(-inf)(-6)(-5,5,0.5)/nol/set temdiff
  ppl hlabs 1,.18
  ppl rlabs 1,0
  ppl shade
