It does not work as expected (same result for any degrees_*):

yes? set axis/units=degrees_north myaxis
yes? shade TrOnTransect
yes? set axis/units=m^3 myaxis
           *** NOTE: Units  not recognized: m^3
           *** NOTE: They will not be convertible:
yes? shade TrOnTransect

The first SHADE shows

    150°W  130°W  ...
    LONGITUDE

and the second SHADE shows

    -150   -130   ...
    X (m^3)
