Hello Tuyet,

as seen from your screen shot, your are using Pyferret instead of 
Ferret. Honestly, I am not really familiar with PyFerret since I am 
working with the classic Ferret program. I've found in
http://ferret.pmel.noaa.gov/Ferret/documentation/pyferret/known-issues/
that "PLOT+pattern files are not yet supported by the new graphics 
engines". However, the shade command should work. For example:

set region/i=1:10/j=1:5
shade i/j
