Hi Nanda,

It appears you may have both Ferret and PyFerret under the same directory (and so sharing the same font files).  Combining Ferret and PyFerret should work, but I am wondering if maybe there is some compatibility issues between the Ubuntu-14.04-64 PyFerret and the RHEL6-64 Ferret font files.  You might want to try installing PyFerret in a separate directory and see if that solves the problem.

The PyFerret-1.2.0 files are now available, so might as well get the latest version of PyFerret:

We are working on updating the website so these links and the new PyFerret commands are not yet in there. 
But related to this issue is the new command in PyFerret 1.2.0 
SET TEXT /FONT= /COLOR= /ISIZ= /ITALIC /BOLD

The font name can be the name of fonts available on your machine, or "Hershey" for the original Ferret font which use those font files.

Note that the original Ferret mark-up (indicators of style or special character) only apply to the "Hershey" font.

Other fonts, such as "Arial" and "Times" use an HTML-like mark-up such as:
<&deg> or <#176> for the degree symbol,
<&tau> or <#964> for tau,
 for superscript text,
 for subscript text

When using these machine-provided fonts, the text is actually saved as text characters (glyphs) instead of becoming just more line drawing as when using the original Ferret Hershey fonts.

I am not seeing your error message.  However, since your subject line indicated a font file problem, I am going to ask if you installed the RHEL6 64 bit version of the Ferret executable (which is what you will need to use for Ubuntu-14.04-64).  The font files sometimes give problems if the wrong version of the Ferret executables is used.
