Hi Arlindo,
The pattern capability is available only with one of the underlying graphics libraries that Ferret uses. It will work if you make the plot on your screen then save it with FRAME/FILE=gif.  It will also work if you make a metafile  and translate to postscript, either from a Ferret session using an X window, or starting Ferret with "ferret -batch".  This is summarized in a NOTE in the documentation on PATTERN:

I am having a problem in saving a plot with hatching( see attachment). The Figure looks fine when I look it on the ferret terminal but the problem arises when I save the plot. I have tried to save it in GIF format as well as in ps but it yields similar results.
