Could you explain what you want to achieve with "merging", exactly?  
I see you have a daily year for 1985, and a monthly year for 1958.  What
should be the end result?  A monthly file from 1958 until 1985 with
only the first and last year filled in?  Do you want to take some kind
of average of the two years?

To start, you could define your time axes a little more "properly" by
adding a time_origin and setting proper units for your time variables
in the netcdf file.  They should look something like

double time(time) ;
	time:units = "hour since 1980-01-14 14:00:00" ;
	time:time_origin = "14-jan-1980 14:00:00" ;

If you make a plot of your data, you should get proper time axis
labels below it with dates or months.  Otherwise ferret doesn't
"understand" the time axis, and won't be able to do much with your
data.

If you can't modify your netcdf files, you can define a new axis in
Ferret instead.  Read up on "define axis" in the manual, and try to put
your variables on a valid ferret axis.
