It seems to be due to the dot in the name of the variable.

ncrename -v alad.2010122040,alad_2010122040 FDalad.2010122040.nc

yes? use FDalad.2010122040.nc
yes? sho da
     currently SET data sets:
    1> ./FDalad.2010122040.nc  (default)
 name     title                             I         J         K         L         M         N
 ALAD_2010122040
          Frost days index is the number   1:58      1:37      1:1       1:1       ...       ...
 
yes? fill ALAD_2010122040
