Re: [ferret_users] Limitation in length in descriptor file name

Hi Patrick,
The length of any dataset name is limited to 2048 characters, including names for descriptor files. I can't reproduce what you are seeing with Ferret v6.67. In fact I made a descriptor file with a name over 200 characters long and was able to open that successfully.

Let's talk off-line and see if we can find out what is happening.

Hi,

I report a problem with use of descriptor file
with a long name (no so, 52 characters).

$ diff tyty.des v3.historical1_rcp85.1_18500101_21051231_1M_PHY.des
$ ferret
yes? go err667_descriptor_filename_length.jnl

!===============================
! OK
use tyty

! Now open the same descriptor with a longer name
use v3.historical1_rcp85.1_18500101_21051231_1M_PHY
At line 496 of file gt_get_time_axis.f
Fortran runtime error: End of record

The files can be found from: http://dods.ipsl.jussieu.fr/brocksce/ferret_bugs/ferret_descriptor_bug/

A solution to work today is to use a shorter name (I have found that less that 38 characters with the extension .des
the descriptor file is openned correctly).

I don't read this limitation from http://ferret.pmel.noaa.gov/Ferret/documentation/users-guide/Grids-Regions/FERRET-PROGRAM-LIMITS
Anyway, this is definitely too short.

I also find the limits s_filename too short. Read
"s_filename 128 Maximum length of the filenames listed within descriptor files <http://ferret.pmel.noaa.gov/Ferret/documentation/users-guide/data-set-basics/NETCDF-DATA#Chapter2-MC%20datasets>." Initially my colleague built a descriptor file with full pathname such as: /dmnfs09/cont003/p86denv/IGCM_OUT/IPSLCM5A/PROD/historical/v3.historical1/MBG/Analyse/TS_MO/v3.historical1_18500101_19491231_1M_PHY.nc
and so with s_filename of 135 characters. This limit should be increased.

Tell me if I have missed something to this topic.

Tested with ferret_v6.6.7
